Last year, during the IALD Enlighten Americas conference in Tucson, Arizona, RBLD Principal Randy Burkett, FIALD, FIES, LC was honored with the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) Lifetime Achievement Award. While we celebrated the moment when it happened, we would be remiss not to recognize it here on our website as part of the story of our firm.
The IALD Lifetime Achievement Award is among the highest honors in architectural lighting design, recognizing individuals whose influence extends far beyond individual projects to impact the profession itself. It is not an award presented lightly – nor even annually! – making Randy’s recognition that much more meaningful.
Over the course of more than four decades, Randy has built a body of work that has included illuminating some of the most recognizable landmarks in North America. His portfolio includes projects such as the lighting of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, collaboration on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington, D.C., and work on the Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor. These projects represent only a small glimpse of a career defined by a deep understanding of how light shapes human experience.
During his acceptance remarks, Randy reflected on a journey that began in rural Pennsylvania and led him through Penn State, early professional experiences, and ultimately to becoming one of the most respected voices in lighting design. True to form, he spent less time talking about his own accomplishments and more time recognizing the mentors, colleagues, clients, and friends who helped shape his path.
Those who know Randy would not have expected anything else.
One of the most memorable moments of the speech came as Randy shared the image of the famous “Pale Blue Dot,” using it as a reminder of both our shared humanity and the responsibility designers have to positively influence the world around us. His reflections on the power of light resonated deeply with the audience, resulting in a spontaneous standing ovation. This was a fitting tribute to a designer whose work has touched countless projects, communities, and professionals across the industry.
At RBLD, we have had the privilege of experiencing Randy’s influence firsthand. Not just through landmark projects and industry leadership, but through mentorship and commitment to thoughtful design, he has helped shape generations of lighting designers at our firm and beyond.
And for anyone wondering, this lifetime achievement award is not a retirement announcement!
We’re grateful that Randy continues to bring his passion, curiosity, and perspective to the office every week.
Please join us in congratulating Randy Burkett on this extraordinary and well-deserved recognition.
